| Place of enumeration |
Place of enumeration refers to the island where the person was found on census night (13 September 00.00 hrs). The migration tables however excludes the non-resident Maldivians who were enumerated in the Maldives |
| Place of usual residence |
The island where the person resided at the time of census. Usual residence is determined based on the duration of one year or more. If the person has lived in that island for less than one year, but intends to live for one year, that island is considered as the usual residence of the person |
| Place of registration |
The island where the person is registered at the time of Census. By law, all Maldivians are required to register in a house and upon which their national identity card can be issued |
| Place of previous residence |
The island/country where the person has lived for 1 year or more before moving to the place of usual residence. For people who have lived in many different islands/countries over the past, this is the island/country where the person lived immediately prior to moving to the place of usual residence |
| Migrant |
A person who have ever changed his/her island of usual residence. In other words, if a person has resided for 1 year or more on another island or country other than his/her current usual place of residence, then that person is considered as a migrant. In cases where the duration is less than 1 year, then his/her or intention is considerered |

A person who has never changed his/her island of usual residence. Those who have never been away from their island of usual residence or never lived in another country for longer than 1 year |
