The third World Statistics Day was celebrated around the globe on 20 October 2020 with the theme “Connecting the world with data we can trust”. This theme reflects on the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems.
The Statistical Commission at its forty-fifth session, endorsed the proposal to celebrate World Statistics Day every five years on 20 October. And in the letter of the Secretary general to the heads of states he invited all Governments, “as the primary producer, user and beneficiary of official statistics, to lend full support to this year’s efforts to make this year’s World Statistics Day 2020 a success”. In establishing this observance, Secretary General has invited all Member States, the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, research institutions, media and all producers and users of official statistics, to do their part to highlight the value of statistics in meeting the challenges of our time.
On 13 October 2020 Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to designate the 20th of October every year as National Statistics Day. The President made this decision following discussions with his Cabinet on a paper presented during today’s Cabinet meeting.

Statistics Week in Maldives
In celebration of the World Statistics day & National Statistics Day in Maldives, National bureau of Statistics decided to hold events throughout the week. The series was inaugurated from the Official event that was held virtually to mark the day. Afterwards a webinar series was conducted from 21st to 27th October 2020.

Publications produced on WSD 2020
To mark the World Statistics day 2020, NBS produced a special edition “Statistical Atlas of Maldives”. An atoll per day was published on the NBS website which included mainly three indicators, Population, Area and Education. These publications were first published on 10th October 2020 until 30th October 2020. This publication was officially launched during the official event that was held to mark the World Statistics Day 2020, by the Speaker of Majilis, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed

World Statistics Day Quiz 2020
To mark the World Statistics day 2020, NBS conducted a quiz in collaboration with UNICEF Maldives throughout the country which included questions from different islands/Atolls of the country. The aim of the quiz was to raise awareness on statistics in island level and provide more information to users through the website of NBS. NBS decided to select a winner from each atoll and the winners were announced during the live virtual event that was held to mark World Statistics Day 2020
