This release shares the results of the poverty and inequality in Maldives. The main findings reveal the newly set poverty line for Maldives while looking at the inequality within the country. The findings of the result also looks at various socio-economic characteristics of the poor by household head.

The household income and expenditure survey 2016 captured the consumption expenditure incurred by households. Household consumption expenditure is the value of consumer goods and services acquired, used or paid for by a household for the satisfaction of the needs and wants of its members.

This release contains the main findings on income levels and disparities. Moreover, this release highlights the characteristics of the main income earner and the characteristics of income generating households together with a general focus on the atoll level distribution.

Technical Report
Sample design was done by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with a technical expert funded by World Bank (WB) during the first half of 2015. The survey was designed in such a way that the results would be representative at the individual Atoll level and the capital Male’. The sampling frame covers the households in the administrative islands of each atoll. HIES covered 48 enumeration block from capital Male’ and 282 enumeration blocks randomly selected from all the 20 Atolls.
